“What is that in your hand?”: A lesson from Dr. Strive Masiyiwa

This series will feature lessons shared by successful business men and women around the world. To kick the series off is a lesson from the Executive Chairman and Founder of the Econet group, Dr. Strive Masiyiwa.

Dr. Strive Masiyiwa, invited by President Barack Obama to attend the 38th G8 summit in 2012, named in 2014 by Fortune Magazine as one of the top 50 most influential business leaders in Africa, named by Forbes Magazine in 2015 as one of the 10 most powerful men in Africa, began business at the age of 25 with a capital of $75. He went around different neighborhoods helping to repair gates and lights and continued to reinvest the money he earned.

12 years down the line after a 5 year long legal battle against the Zimbabwean government he began his telecommunications company; Econet. The company soon spread from Zimbabwe to South Africa, Botswana, Nigeria, UK, New Zealand and many more countries worldwide.

A man of Faith, Dr. Masiyiwa attributes his success to studying the Bible, in his own words, “my favourite business book is the Bible. If you study the bible with a view to extracting principles on how to set up, and manage a business effectively, you will be absolutely amazed; it has everything”.

According to Dr. Masiyiwa, success begins where you are with what you have, he often asks budding entrepreneurs the single question, “what is that in your hand?” the question that God asked Moses after having given him the mandate to rescue the Israelites from the land of Egypt. Dr. Masiyiwa emphasizes that whatever you have in your hand right now is all you need to be successful. Whether it be a talent, a gift or an amount of money, whatever it is that you have is all you need.

From a young man with a capital of $75 to a man with a foundation that has sponsored over 100,000 African students to universities in the US, UK and China, provides orphans with schooling, healthcare and food and fights actively against HIV/AIDS and Ebola, Strive Masiyiwa has truly shown that with what you have in your hand you can someday change the world.

So, here’s the question “what is that in your hand?”.
